Born from a collaboration of artists, and community builders coming together to advance the struggle for Planet Repairs, Roots To Repair promotes art, music and culture as an active practice of internationalist solidarity to support communities of resistance in the Majority World. In collaboration with the PRALER Fund Campaign, Roots To Repair aims to amplify the stories of the Communities of Resistance leading PRALER through the arts.
We believe that art can build visibility for ongoing struggles, acting as a vehicle to mobilise resources towards communities resisting colonial violence and defending Mother Earth. We recognise that much of what is celebrated through music and dance is rooted in the wisdom and resources of Indigenous communities. Roots To Repair aims to repoliticise art that has been greatly inspired from the cultures of colonised peoples in the Global South, creating a way for our art to actively support their fight for liberation. We insist that the arts must act as a vessel for mutual aid and through the PRALER model we are establishing a meaningful exchange between artists in the Global North and colonised peoples of the Global South. We are currently in collaboration with revolutionary movements in Burkina Faso who are advancing an Indigenous Afrikan vision of decolonisation, sovereignty, and the rewriting of Afrika.
These collaborations show us where art must ultimately remain accountable to political realities. At the heart of this is our commitment to accountability, as an ongoing practice of awareness, responsibility, and action. It asks us to consider what we create and share, where it is inspired from, who it belongs to, and how we relate to it. It requires us to move beyond appreciation and into active solidarity, recognising the systems shaped by coloniality which we benefit from and are complicit in reinforcing in the Global North.
We were thrilled by the interest gained from our launch event which took place at the end of last year in collaboration with LoveJam and THRIVE at &Soul. We came together growing our networks of connection by sharing together in music, dance, art and poetry, drawing from cultures of the Global South in order to uplift their stories and struggles. We also raised awareness for the PRALER Fund Campaign, particularly promoting the AfreCycle project, as well as the work of FENMUCARINAP The National Federation of Peasant, Artisan, Indigenous, Native and Salaried Women of Peru. We heard messages from those directly on the ground and discussed how we can come together in internationalist solidarity with these peoples to amplify their fight for land, life and dignity. We are proud to announce that we collected over £800 through our raffle, donations, tickets and stall of artisanal goods, in support of grassroots communities of resistance in the Majority World!
Finally, we’re very excited to announce that we are growing this movement and that Roots To Repair will be at SoulRevolution Festival, Buddahfield Festival and Medicine Festival this year. We hope that through these festival collaborations we will continue to amplify PRALER’s work, transforming art into a tool for solidarity, action, and repair!
